What is a typical Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel can improve fine wrinkles, blotches, irregular pigment and other skin flaws. It can achieve a more uniform color and texture for people with skin damage from sun exposure and aging. It can also be used to treat some types of acne.

During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the face. The solution can vary from a mild peel with glycolic acid to a medium or deep peel with trichloroacetic acid. The solutions are generally clear. The solution damages the outer layers of the skin. The damaged skin separates from the bottom layers and will peel off over several days. You will have a repair mechanism take hold, causing the skin beneath to be stimulated.

What can it fix?

A chemical peel can be used to treat mild scarring ( mostly red flat discolorations), types of acne, sun spots and other sun damage, age spots, liver spots, freckles and blotchiness. It can be used on the skin on the face and other body parts.

Why does Dr. Rapaport suggest a chemical peel series instead of one deeper peel?

Recent discoveries have shown that when a series of peels are performed within a short time interval, the effect is greater than any one procedure. Dr. Rapaport has developed a series of medium peels that duplicate the results of a deeper procedure without the long and inconvenient recovery time.

What are the treatments like?

Every person will respond a little differently to the peel series. In most cases, the procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. A minimal amount of redness and tingling develops, which ends prior to leaving the office. Within 2 to 5 days, a light peeling is faintly visible and lasts about 5 days. Special moisturizers and medications are given with written instruction to help the skin exfoliate in a safe and healthy manner. The peels are administered three times at two week intervals for maximum results.
